Auto Hail Repair: Use a local company!

When a hail storm hits any area, you can be sure that the storm-chasing hail repair technicians are sure to follow.  Many of these techs will work through the local body shops, and others will set up temporary shops in vacant buildings.   Many of these paintless dent removal technicians will do a great job repairing your hail damaged vehicle, although many of them will not.  Some of the issues created by a lousy job will not show up til after the shop has closed up.  Some of these issues can be broken trim clips, interior electronics shorting, or even cracked exterior paint.

For these reasons we reccomend that you use a local company to perform your paintless dent repairs.  DINGS Paintless Dent Repair is a local Atlanta company, serving all of Metro Atlanta for excellent hail damage repairs.  We have been in business for 7 years, and have thousands of satisfied customers.  Many of these customers have left feedback about our services online.  Check our reviews at www.google.com www.angieslist.com or www.kudzu.com .

Will these dents come back?

I have been asked this question  many times, especially in regards to hail damage.  People wonder if at some later point, the dents that have been repaired with PDR, will come back.  The answer is almost always no.  Almost!  Well then, which dents will come back?  How do you know if the money you are spending for a repair is worth it?

It is actually not a gamble at all.  The only dents that ever “come back” are dents that should not be repaired with paintless dent repair from the beginning.  There are dents that are too severe to repair well with PDR.  When hailstones get in to the baseball and larger range, the dents they create are often to large or severe to repair well.  Sometimes people will still repair these dents.  It may be to save money; or it could be a PDR tech who is too hungry, not willing to let the work go to the body man.  Whatever the reason is, when a dent stretches the metal, it will likely never want to be reshaped back to it’s original shape.  It will likely want to OIL-CAN.

Oil-canning is when the metal wants to either slightly bulge out, or pop back in.  It won’t just go back flat.  Like I said already, when the damage occurred, the metal got slightly stretched, and there is “too much” metal now.  When the damage is repaired, it will now either repair out to a slight (and sometimes hardly noticeable) bulge, or it will pop back in to a minor dent.  It is these oil-canning dents that later “come back.  The dent tech repairs the dent, and it can look great, but it is actually slightly bulging.  All it takes is someone to later push on it, or for it to heat up in the hot summer sun, and the dent can pop back in.

So yes sometimes dents do “come back”.  Although this is only because the dent should have not been repaired with PDR, or the technician should have warned the owner when the repair was done.   A reputable, honest and knowledgeable dent  tech will give the owner all of the information they need to know.  Open communication  is always helpful in these situations.

Is Paintless Dent Repair a good alternative to Conventional Repair?

Paintless dent repair came on the scene much later than traditional body repair, and has been an alternative that has continually grown in respect and prominence in the last 15 years.   During this time PDR has been considered an alternative to repairing the vehicle with sandpaper, fillers, and new paint.  I don’t believe that PDR should be considered an alternative to conventional repair; this equation is actually backwards.

Paintless dent repair is by far the preferable repair, when done by a quality dent technician.  The first and most obvious benefit is keeping the original factory finish on the vehicle.  Even the best painter blends his paint work because the paint almost never matches perfectly.  Even with a good color match and blend, in time the color and or finish on the repaired surfaces may fade unevenly.  After a couple years many paint repairs don’t match as well as they did originally.  With PDR, the finished product will always look the same.  There are no issues with mismatched or fading paint.

Secondly, the cost of PDR is almost always much less expensive than conventional body repair.  There are many less steps, and even less people involved in the process.  Take a $100 door ding for an example.  This quarter sized dent will repair perfectly with the skills of a master PDR tech.  If you take this same dent down to a body shop for a quote, they will likely want to paint not just the door, but also the panel in front of, or behind it.  At a shop that does a great job, this could cost anywhere from $350 to $1000.  There is no comparison!

Lastly, the convenience factor is a great bonus.  The average minor dent can be repaired with PDR in under an hour.  There is no need for a rental car; you can wait for your repair!  Some PDR companies will even come to your home or office to do the repair!

Before you take you car to a body shop, take it to a reputable PDR company to see if it can be repaired the right way!

Hail Damage – Can you really fix this?

For many people, the first time they hear about paintless dent comes after a hail storm damages their vehicle.  These days most insurance companies are recommending  PDR (paintless dent repair) to repair hail damage.   This has not always been true.  Ten years ago PDR was a lesser known, and somewhat scary repair alternative.  Today, anyone in the insurance or automotive industry will know about the process.

The average consumer looks at the damage on their vehicle and is in disbelief that the dents can be repaired without painting the car.  If this is you, please rest at ease.  If you choose a reputable company  for repairs (check business review sites like www.kudzu.com) your vehicle will look new when the repairs are done.    A great dent technician doesn’t just make the dents look “better”.  The dents are completely removed.  For most hail damage, you should be able to look over your car closely, and not find any evidence that it ever had dents!.

Not every dent company is reputable.  To be on the safe side, choose a local dent repair company.  After a hail storm, many traveling companies will come into town to do business for a short time and then leave when the work dries up.  Many of these companies will do good work, although some of them will hurry through the repairs, not concerned with their reputation in town.  You may have problems later with trim or clips, which may be broken if not removed or installed carefully during repair.

One of the other concerns that people have is the headliner.  Most hail damage repairs do involve lowering and reinstalling the headliner.  This is nothing to be concerned with if you use a reputable, careful dent repair company.  Modern headliners are not at all like the old stretched-cloth liners.  The new headliners are single-component fiberglass or fiberboard frames, with laminated cloth.  They lower quite simply with the removal of several screws and trim pieces.  Again, as long as the technician is careful, you will never know that he was in your vehicle.

Dings Paintless Dent Repair has been in business in Marietta for seven years.  We have repaired hundreds of hail damaged vehicles, always to the customers complete satisfaction.  Please read our reviews at kudzu.com, or google; you will find that we do great work, for a fair price.  Please call or email for an estimate.
